If darkness is the absence of light, then it is easy to understand how difficult it is to see through the darkness when we are exposed to it.
If we can agree with this, then we can also agree it is easy to get lost or to lose our way in the middle of the darkness. It is during these times; we can feel “the weight of darkness.
This weight is heavy and gets heavier the further we move into the darkness.
I am sure everyone can think of times when you have been somewhere it was so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. The apprehension, if not fear this causes is real and grows the longer, we are exposed to the darkness.
The darkness I am referring to is physical darkness. But I submit, there is another kind of darkness that exists in our world.
It is spiritual darkness. This darkness too is devoid of light, yet instead of running from this darkness, many are running toward it by embracing it with intention and passion.
Unbeknownst to them, this is leading them further and further away from the light.
The darkness I am referring to seems to be a driving force in the lives of many today. There is even arrogance and anger present among some when they are told what they are involved in is dark and dangerous.
It is as if they have wandered so deep into the darkness, they are unaware they have been overcome by its weight.
The desire to stay in this type of darkness is both sad and terrifying at the same time. This is true because there is intention and purpose behind spiritual darkness and that intention and purpose is to keep folks away from the light.
Why? The answer is because as people draw nearer to the light, the more they become aware of the darkness.
The light I am referring to is Jesus Christ and the darkness is the enemy of our souls, Satan.
The battle for the hearts and minds of human beings is raging all around us all the time. Yet so many are walking around in darkness so deep they are not only unable to see the light, but they are unwilling to look for it.
The weight of this darkness is crushing people so slowly they do not even notice. The evidence this spiritual darkness exists is seen all around us. Yet, many refuse to consider or believe it exists.
If this is true, then “the weight of darkness” is winning. The beauty is, even though this may appear to be true, unlike physical darkness, spiritual darkness is not devoid of light.
The light of Christ in this darkness cannot be extinguished and all someone must do is open their eyes and they will see the light and be able to find their way out of the darkness.
The question I have is, if believers in Jesus Christ are the carriers of His light, will we use it to lift “the weight of darkness” off those around us or will we just stand by and watch them be crushed by its weight?
John 8:12, “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
