Searching for a Rainbow

In the song “Searching for a Rainbow” the lyrics say, “I’m searching for a rainbow and if the wind ever shows me where to go, you’ll be waitin’ at the end and I know, I’ll say to hell with that pot of gold”.

I believe the unique truth found in this song is expressed throughout our life because we all seem to be searching for something.

The question is, what are we searching for? Are we searching for purpose, or meaning or is it something else? Maybe it’s love, or fulfillment or something we hope to find at the end of our rainbow?

The answers are different for each of us, but the search remains the same.

I find it interesting for some, the rainbow is at the center of their search for identity. It has come to symbolize diversity and an expression of individuality, while representing a culture, or a demographic. Regardless of our reason or our perspective, the rainbow represents hope and a desire for something more.

Why? The reason is found in the rainbow itself.

This is revealed in Genesis 9:13 where God says, “I have sent My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”

This passage tells us the rainbow is a sign of a covenant or promise from God. His love for His creation is to be remembered each time we see a rainbow. We are all children of that promise and recipients of that love and without knowing it, our hearts are drawn to the rainbow because of the promise of God.

This is why we are all “searching for a rainbow”.

For me, the rainbow has always been something amazing. As a child, it always gave me sense of awe and wonder when I saw the beautiful colors in the sky. Though I still marvel at the rainbow, now it is because I understand the promise it represents.

So, each time you look up and see a rainbow take a moment to pause and consider the promises of God. As you do, perhaps you will realize whatever you are seeking can be found in Him.

Then, as we sojourn through this life together, perhaps we will understand what we are looking for is the source of the rainbow not the end. When we do maybe, we will all be able to say, “the hell with that pot of gold”.

Genesis 9:13 , “I have sent My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”
