New Year, Same Me

Like every new day, each New Year is an opportunity to start over. We can change old habits and create new ones to help us improve in the coming year.

Interestingly, it is said that most people who make resolutions for the New Year break them after as little as four days.

Why?

Is it a lack of drive, commitment, or motivation? Maybe this is because they have made this same resolution on more than one occasion and are still dealing with the same issues each year.

The next question is, why would someone resolve to change and fail to do so?

I am not sure about anyone else, but I have often realized in my life that the reason I cannot overcome an issue is me. Further, when I cannot find the ability to move past the hurt or pain I have dealt with in the past, I realize it is because I don’t want to.

The willingness to hold on to our past makes it impossible to enjoy our present or look forward to the future.

Knowing it is a “New Year, Same Me” comes into play here.

If this is true for you, how do we change ourselves to create a new opportunity for a better day? We start by recognizing the blessings we have today.

This will allow us to overcome yesterday's disappointments and discouragement while giving us reason to hope for a better tomorrow.

Sounds simple. Well, we all know it is not. The past can weigh us down to the point where our present is affected, and our future is in doubt.

The way forward can be daunting if we do not clearly understand that there is something better for us this year.

That something is Jesus. The irony is that many people refuse to believe this is true. If this is you, I would ask you to consider the possibility that Jesus is the anchor you can hold to during life's storms. He can provide you a way forward when you feel there is no way.

In sharing this with anyone who takes the time to read it, I hope you will realize that in Jesus, this can be a New Year for a new you. Without Him, I fear everything continues as always: “New Year, Same Me.”

2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
