Our lives are filled with opportunities to be influenced. This occurs everywhere, all the time.
The people around us constantly influence us, affecting what we see and hear. Influence and influencers shape our thoughts and feelings.
This is the power of influence.
Influence occurs for many reasons, including admiration and respect. This enables influencers to hold a significant place in our lives. The problem is that many times, the agenda behind these influencers is not for our well-being, but rather to push what they believe is best for themselves.
There are also times when we are drawn to influencers as a means of personal benefit.
Perhaps we are vying for position or trying to get ahead and feel that being close to a particular person or group is the best way to accomplish this.
The question we must ask ourselves is: Are we seeking people of influence to increase our influence?
As with everything, our motives are ours, and being aware of them is something we all need to consider.
Some will dispute my contention, arguing that they have no agenda other than admiring the influencers who have earned their position through years of accomplishment and success.
This may be true, but what if it is not? I do not have the answer, but the question prompts me to pause and consider the people who influence me and those I influence.
If attaining a position for money, power, or prestige is our motivation, we need to reassess our goals. If admiration and accomplishment measure influence and influencers, there is one who has earned both. He is more influential today than He was two thousand years ago. His name is Jesus. He is an influencer with no rival. His influence, when followed and emulated, surpasses that of all others.
If we want to gain influence and become influencers. We can accomplish both by following Jesus. When we do, He will lead us to where He wants us to go!
John 1:50, “Jesus said, 'You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
